With SCR500 track record of more than 5 years, UNGSII was asked to transform the concept and help cities overcoming the following paradox: while the cities being the ones on the ground with the best and most hands on experience how to implement the 17 SDGs, their concrete projects were refused by the finance sector in 9 out of 10 cases as traditional compliance standards were not existing. Therefore UNGSII created the 25+5 SDG Leadership platform for 25 cities and 5 indigenous communities in order to understand the realities in communities on all continents even better. Within less than 3 years UNGSII and UN Habitat decided to unite their efforts in regards to help mayors and their administration to overcome the challenges of finding access to SDG related funding. Improvements and Learnings were shared once per year at the SDG Lab in Davos but as well at the UN Habitat Urban Forum in Abu Dhabi as well as Kattowitz. During the General Assembly of UN Habitat in Nairobi, June 2023, expert teams were mandated to develop criteria and metrics for testing in 20 countries (80 cities) to move forward with SDG-City-Certification, in order to find a globally accepted solutions for the other 9920 cities with more than 100.000 citizens.
